Without having to give it any thought, I know that the person I would most want to talk with would be my daughter, Rebecca, who was killed on Thanksgiving, 2002, by a drunk driver. Here's the poem I wrote for her back in 2009.
Do You Remember
Do you remember me
Do you think of me
In those quiet, solitary moments
Or when your soul is filled with ripples of laughter
That arrive one after the other
Like waves upon the shore
Do you remember the ocean
The feel of cold salt-water upon your skin
The rush of wind against your face
Or the way you flew across the sand
That wide ribbon of beach
Do you remember the sky
Blue and cloudless
On a shimmering sun-brilliant day
The golden rays warming your body
Turning skin to mocha brown
Do you still smell the rain
In those first moments of its descent
As it falls slowly toward earth
Do you remember the anticipation, the joy
At watching the world be bathed anew
Do you remember my arms wrapping around you
Holding you close
The rhythm of my heart beating
Against your silky-soft, baby’s cheek
You dozing so peacefully
Soothed and rocked toward dreams
Do you know
I carry your essence in my heart
Images from our past
Fill my waking hours
Haunt my dreams
Remember me often, my darling
Remember me with smiles and laughter
With tears and love
Remember me often
As I remember you
