Of the Mountain
We navigate the dirt path
snaking up the side of the mountain
each of us moving
toward the destiny
we hold together
you go cautiously
carefully
each step reflects thought
the weighing of consequences
you carry your past
a weighted pack
old wounds
lessons learned
I urge you on
match my stride
make the climb
elongated steps
in quick succession
my heartbeat quickens
I strain against the incline
breathing in shallow huffs and puffs
I am angered by your rational words
telling me to slow down
to pace myself
I reach for the future
I want to hold it
to shape it
we clash
straining against each another
why can't you fall into my step
hushed silence
we surrender to what is real
true
the cool skin of your cheek
brushes against mine
the hard line of your chin
rests on the crown of my head
comfort in this embrace
in the soft blanket of dusk
the last rays of light hover
just beyond the ridge
the day fades
giving way to night
we find our pace
leading us to a destination
all our own
