A Calm Peace
Older now, my parents sit
holding hands
sometimes for hours
as they watch TV, each other
gaze out the window
taking in the ocean, the people
life going by
My parents sing
sweet songs to one another
the bickering, the angst
no longer hangs between them
replaced now by a comfortable friendship
a calm peace that comes
with more than six decades of marriage
I watch them
and miss the banter
the quick wit
the passion that once defined them
my mother tells him
you’re a good person,
I love you
he responds with
I love you, too
and questions about what she needs
if she’s okay
Two remarkable souls
sitting together
old and frail now
with hands entwined
they wait
they watch
as life goes by
